STAGE 1: LEARNING PATH

The Board of Directors strongly recommends live training and preparation for writing your exams for certification. We understand there are instances where there is not live, in-person training within a reasonable driving distance. We also understand that there are life situations where accessing a live, in-person training opportunity is not feasible. In these cases, online training is appropriate and acceptable.

Completion of an approved course of study by which the  counselor-in-training will acquire the basic approach to counseling that effects biblical change is required.

Attention will be given to discovering foundational problems and guiding the counselee into taking the steps necessary to discover God's solutions and develop a biblical action plan that will bring about biblical, transformational change in thoughts, beliefs, attitudes,
and behaviors.

Option 1: IABC Training Center Programs

The IABC Certification Program offers a rigorous yet achievable program of education and training toward certification for those members who meet the qualifications. The IABC Training Centers provide programs that meet or exceed the basic requirements of training and education outlined in the Directed Study Program.

Certification  is  important  as  it  allows  for  counselors  to  meet  a  high  standard  of counseling excellence and biblical integrity, promotes a uniform approach to counseling  from  God's  Word,  and  provides cohesion in the Biblical Counseling Movement, while also allowing freedom of conscience and style.

A Certified Biblical Counselor is one who is a member in good standing and has completed all the requirements outlined in the certification manual. Training Center Directors (TCDs) are familiar with and able to lead qualified members through the IABC certification process. IABC Training Centers are the main avenue through which Certified Biblical Counselors Candidates can meet the requirement of completing an IABC approved course of study in Biblical Counseling. All fees related to the Training Center will be handled by the TCD.

STAGE 3: SUPERVISED COUNSELING

Supervised Counseling is the last step in your training, whichever option for training you choose. This mentorship fee is approximately* $550.00 (This includes $100.00 for the 2nd Reviewer for the Exams). Contact your Training Center or Certification Mentor for details.

When you have completed training and passed the exams, you will work with a Certification Mentor to complete the process. Most candidates will be supervised locally by their Training Center Director or Direct Study Program Certification Mentor. However, the candidate needs to consult with the TCD or DSP Certification Mentor if he/she desires to seek another Certification Mentor for the Supervised Counseling portion.

Complete a minimum of 50 sessions of counseling (at the discretion of the Certification Mentor, additional sessions may be required).

*Although IABC sets a standardized fee, it is a suggested starting point. Fees vary by Training Center and Certification Mentor. Each mentor is an approved affiliate of IABC and remains autonomous when it comes to fees.

Complete 50 Hours Supervised Counseling

The purpose of mentoring is to assist the applicant through the training and educational process as well as providing the vital supervised counseling hours required for certification. Certification Mentors provide feedback to the candidate on active cases during their candidacy and for the following two years as the new counselor gains experience and seasoning. Only active cases will be considered towards the supervised counseling hours unless otherwise worked out with the Certification Mentor.
